I moved to New York City, and began making documentaries in 1988. My interests have always been artists who were first and second generation Abstract Expressionists; and later artists who assimilate these visual elements.
I received a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from The University of Georgia. Before moving to New York, I taught college art and studied filmmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Seeing a 12 min b/w 16mm film of Larry Poons and Frank Stella speaking about their own work while an undergraduate had a profound impact; the on-screen presence of the artists themselves talking in their own words about their work.
In addition to galleries and museums, these documentaries have been broadcast on PBS and Public Television in the states, and in Europe. And all the while, my own studio painting has continued.
